Betla National Park
Betla National Park In Jharkhand, India
Betla National Park, located in the Latehar district of Jharkhand, is one of India’s most significant and historic wildlife reserves. Covering an area of 1,026 square kilometers, it was originally part of the Palamau Tiger Reserve, which was among the first nine tiger reserves established under Project Tiger in 1973.
In 1986, Betla was declared a national park, making it one of the first such designated areas in Jharkhand. The park is known for its diverse landscapes, ranging from dense tropical forests and grasslands to hilly terrain and waterfalls.
It is home to a variety of wildlife, including Bengal tigers, leopards, elephants, sloth bears, Indian gaur (bison), chital (spotted deer), sambar, and langurs. The Koel River and its tributaries flow through the park, providing a water source for the rich biodiversity. Apart from its natural beauty and wildlife, Betla National Park is also famous for its historical sites, particularly the Betla Fort, an ancient structure dating back to the 17th century, built by the Chero kings.
