Bandipur National Park In Karnataka, India

Bandipur National Park, located in the Chamarajanagar district of Karnataka, is one of India’s most famous and well-preserved wildlife sanctuaries. Spanning 868 square kilometers, it is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and is connected to Mudumalai National Park (Tamil Nadu), Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary (Kerala), and Nagarhole National Park (Karnataka), forming one of the largest protected wildlife areas in South India.

Established as a tiger reserve under Project Tiger in 1973, Bandipur is renowned for its rich biodiversity, scenic landscapes, and thriving populations of wild animals. The park is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including the Bengal tiger, Indian leopard, Asiatic wild dog (dhole), sloth bear, striped hyena, sambar deer, chital (spotted deer), Indian gaur (bison), and wild boars.

One of the highlights of Bandipur is its large population of Indian elephants, which can often be spotted roaming freely in the dense forests and open grasslands. The park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 200 species of birds, including the Malabar pied hornbill, crested hawk-eagle, grey-headed fish eagle, and paradise flycatcher.

Bandipur’s landscape is characterized by dry deciduous forests, open grassy meadows, and rivers, including the Kabini, Nugu, and Moyar Rivers, which provide vital water sources for wildlife.

The park’s strategic location along the Bangalore-Ooty highway (NH 181) makes it easily accessible, but strict regulations are in place to protect the ecosystem. Jeep safaris and bus safaris are the best ways to explore the park and witness its incredible wildlife up close.

With its stunning landscapes, diverse wildlife, and conservation significance, Bandipur National Park stands as one of India’s premier wildlife destinations, offering an unforgettable experience for nature lovers, wildlife photographers, and adventure seekers.
