Bhagwan Mahaveer Sanctuary and Mollem National Park, located in the Western Ghats of Goa, is a biodiversity hotspot known for its lush forests, waterfalls, and rich wildlife. Covering an area of 107 square kilometers, it forms the core area of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary and was declared a national park in 1978.
The park is famous for its dense tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forests, which provide a thriving habitat for a wide variety of flora and fauna. Mollem National Park is home to Bengal tigers, leopards, Indian gaurs (bison), wild boars, Malabar giant squirrels, sloth bears, porcupines, and several species of deer, making it an important wildlife conservation area in Goa.
The park also supports over 200 species of birds, including the paradise flycatcher, great Indian hornbill, Malabar trogon, and golden oriole, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. Reptiles such as king cobras, Indian rock pythons, and various lizards and turtles can also be spotted within its forests.
One of the major attractions of Mollem National Park is the Dudhsagar Waterfalls, one of India’s tallest and most scenic waterfalls, drawing tourists and nature lovers throughout the year. Another highlight is the Tambdi Surla Mahadev Temple, a 12th-century Shiva temple built in the Kadamba architectural style, which is nestled deep inside the park.
