Buxa Tiger Reserve
Buxa Tiger Reserve In West Bengal, India
Buxa Tiger Reserve, located in the Alipurduar district of West Bengal, is a significant wildlife sanctuary known for its rich biodiversity and crucial role in tiger conservation. Established in 1983 and declared a tiger reserve under Project Tiger, Buxa covers an area of approximately 760 square kilometers and is the largest forested region in North Bengal.
The reserve shares its northern boundary with Bhutan’s Phipsoo Wildlife Sanctuary and lies close to Assam’s Manas National Park, making it an important corridor for wildlife movement. The landscape of Buxa is diverse, consisting of dense forests, hills, grasslands, and rivers, creating an ideal habitat for a variety of species. Though tigers are elusive here, the reserve is home to other wildlife, including leopards, elephants, clouded leopards, Indian bison (gaur), wild boars, and several species of deer.
The rich avian diversity includes hornbills, kingfishers, eagles, and migratory birds, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. Buxa is also culturally and historically significant, with the ruins of the Buxa Fort, which once served as a detention camp during British rule.
The reserve is a major attraction for eco-tourists and adventure seekers, offering trekking opportunities through scenic trails leading to Jayanti, Raimatang, and Mahakal caves. The dense forests of Buxa are also home to various medicinal plants and rare orchids, adding to its ecological importance.
With its breathtaking landscapes, diverse wildlife, and historical relevance, Buxa Tiger Reserve remains an essential destination for nature lovers, conservationists, and travelers seeking a unique wilderness experience in the eastern Himalayas.
