Govind Pashu Vihar National Park, located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India, is a stunning wildlife sanctuary and national park known for its rich biodiversity and breathtaking Himalayan landscapes. Covering an area of approximately 958 square kilometers, it was established in 1955 as a wildlife sanctuary and later declared a national park in 1990 to protect the diverse flora and fauna of the region.
The park is famous for being a crucial habitat for the Snow Leopard, one of the most elusive big cats, along with other rare species such as the Himalayan Black Bear, Musk Deer, Himalayan Tahr, Serow, and Bharal (Blue Sheep). It is also home to a variety of bird species, including the Himalayan Monal, the state bird of Uttarakhand. The vegetation in the park ranges from dense coniferous forests of pine, deodar, and fir at lower altitudes to alpine meadows and glaciers at higher elevations, making it a paradise for nature lovers and botanists.
The Har Ki Dun Valley, located within the park, is a major trekking destination, offering breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks, lush meadows, and the crystal-clear Supin River.
The best time to visit it is from April to June and September to November, as the region experiences heavy snowfall in winter. Apart from its ecological significance, the park plays a vital role in preserving the Upper Tons River Basin, which is a major tributary of the Yamuna River.
