Great Himalayan National Park (GHNP), located in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of India’s most spectacular high-altitude national parks. Spanning an area of 1,171 square kilometers, it was established in 1984 and is known for its breathtaking landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and rich biodiversity.

Nestled in the Western Himalayas, the park ranges in elevation from 1,500 meters to over 6,000 meters, creating a variety of climatic zones that support dense forests, alpine meadows, glaciers, and snow-covered peaks. GHNP is home to a wide range of flora and fauna, including several endangered and rare species.

Some of the notable mammals found here include the snow leopard, Himalayan brown bear, blue sheep (bharal), Himalayan tahr, musk deer, red fox, and Himalayan black bear. The park also boasts a rich population of over 375 species of fauna, including monals, western tragopans, koklass pheasants, and Himalayan griffon vultures, making it a haven for birdwatchers.

The diverse vegetation includes oak, deodar, fir, and rhododendron forests in the lower altitudes, while the upper regions are covered with alpine meadows and glaciers. One of the major attractions of the park is its trekking opportunities, offering trails through dense forests, remote villages, and high-altitude landscapes. Popular treks include the Tirthan Valley Trek, Sainj Valley Trek, and the Pin-Parvati Pass Trek, which provide a chance to experience Himalayan wilderness, waterfalls, and breathtaking mountain views. Due to its fragile ecosystem, GHNP follows strict eco-tourism guidelines, and only on-foot exploration is allowed, ensuring minimal human impact on the environment.
