Kaziranga National Park
Kaziranga National Park In Assam, India
Kaziranga National Park, located in the Golaghat, Nagaon, and Karbi Anglong districts of Assam, India, is one of the most renowned wildlife sanctuaries in the world. Spanning an area of 1,090 square kilometers, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was declared a national park in 1974.
Kaziranga is world-famous for its population of the Indian one-horned rhinoceros, housing more than 2,600 individuals, which is about two-thirds of the world’s total population. Situated on the floodplains of the Brahmaputra River, Kaziranga is characterized by tall elephant grass, dense tropical forests, marshlands, and numerous water bodies, making it an ideal habitat for diverse wildlife.
The park is home to the Big Five of Indian wildlife—the Indian one-horned rhinoceros, Bengal tiger, Asiatic elephant, wild water buffalo, and swamp deer. It also boasts one of the highest densities of tigers among protected areas in the world and was declared a Tiger Reserve in 2006. Apart from its large mammals, Kaziranga is also a haven for birdwatchers, with over 500 species of birds, including the great Indian hornbill, pelicans, storks, eagles, and migratory birds like bar-headed geese and ferruginous ducks.
The park also supports gangetic river dolphins, various species of turtles, monitor lizards, and king cobras, adding to its rich biodiversity. The best way to explore Kaziranga is through its elephant and jeep safaris, which provide close encounters with wildlife.
The park is divided into four zones—Kohora (Central Range), Bagori (Western Range), Agaratoli (Eastern Range), and Burapahar (Ghorakati Range)—each offering a unique wildlife experience.
Kaziranga National Park stands as a symbol of successful wildlife conservation, particularly in protecting the Indian one-horned rhinoceros from poaching. It remains one of India’s greatest wildlife destinations, attracting nature lovers, photographers, and adventure seekers from all over the world.
