Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, located in the Wandoor region of South Andaman Island, is one of India’s most significant marine conservation areas. Established in 1983, the park covers an area of approximately 281.5 square kilometers and is composed of 15 small islands, each surrounded by crystal-clear waters, coral reefs, and a diverse range of marine life. The park was created primarily to protect the rich biodiversity of the coral reef ecosystems and the nesting sites of sea turtles, including the green sea turtle, hawksbill turtle, and leatherback turtle.

It is also home to a variety of tropical fish, saltwater crocodiles, starfish, mollusks, and sea anemones, making it a paradise for marine biologists, snorkelers, and scuba divers. The park’s islands, such as Jolly Buoy and Red Skin Island, are particularly famous for their stunning coral reefs, which display a mesmerizing array of colors and formations. These islands offer limited yet well-regulated access to visitors, ensuring the delicate marine environment remains undisturbed.

The mangrove creeks and tropical rainforests that fringe the islands further enhance the region’s ecological diversity, providing a habitat for various bird species, including the white-bellied sea eagle, kingfishers, and herons.
