Pampadum Shola National Park
Pampadum Shola National Park In Kerala, India
Pampadum Shola National Park, located in the Idukki district of Kerala, is the smallest national park in the state, covering just 1.32 square kilometers. It is also an important habitat for elephants that migrate between the neighboring Eravikulam and Anamudi Shola National Parks.
Despite its small size, it plays a vital role in preserving the unique shola ecosystem of the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The name “Pampadum Shola” translates to “the forest where snakes dance”, highlighting the region’s rich biodiversity and mystical beauty. The park is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including the Indian leopard, wild boar, Nilgiri marten, Indian porcupine, and Malabar giant squirrel.
The region is a paradise for birdwatchers, featuring endemic species like the Nilgiri flycatcher, white-bellied shortwing, and Nilgiri wood pigeon. Additionally, the park supports numerous species of butterflies, amphibians, and reptiles, many of which are found only in the Western Ghats. The dense montane forests, rolling hills, and mist-covered landscapes make Pampadum Shola a perfect eco-tourism destination.
Popular activities include trekking, nature walks, and birdwatching, with guided tours offering insights into the rich flora and fauna. The park also has eco-huts for overnight stays, allowing visitors to experience the untouched beauty of nature. With its pristine forests, rare wildlife, and peaceful ambiance, Pampadum Shola National Park is a must-visit for nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, and adventure seekers, offering a unique escape into the heart of the Western Ghats.
