Papikonda National Park In Andhra Pradesh, India

Papikonda National Park, located in the Godavari River basin, spans across the East Godavari and West Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh and parts of Telangana, India. Covering an area of approximately 1,012 square kilometers, this national park is a crucial part of the Eastern Ghats and is known for its dense tropical rainforests, diverse wildlife, and breathtaking landscapes.

The park, which was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1978 and later upgraded to a national park in 2008, is an important ecological zone that helps protect the rich biodiversity of the region. The Godavari River, which flows through the park, adds to its beauty and supports a wide range of flora and fauna. The forests in Papikonda National Park are primarily tropical moist deciduous and semi-evergreen, with tree species such as teak, bamboo, rosewood, and sandalwood.

The park is home to numerous endangered and rare species, including the Indian leopard, sloth bear, barking deer, four-horned antelope, wild boar, and Indian gaur (bison).

It is also a significant habitat for tigers, as it forms part of the Eastern Ghats Tiger Corridor, which connects various tiger reserves in the region. Papikonda National Park is also a birdwatcher’s paradise, with over 100 species of birds, including the Malabar pied hornbill, grey-headed fish eagle, crested serpent eagle, and Indian pitta.

The park’s rivers and streams support mugger crocodiles, freshwater turtles, and a variety of fish species. One of the major attractions of Papikonda National Park is the Papikondalu hills, which offer breathtaking views of the Godavari River flowing through the dense forests.

The park is accessible via Rajahmundry, which is the nearest major city, from where visitors can take a road trip or a boat cruise to explore the region. Due to its rich biodiversity, stunning landscapes, and cultural significance, Papikonda National Park is one of the most important protected areas in southern India, attracting nature lovers, wildlife enthusiasts, and adventure seekers alike.
