Singalila National Park, located in the Darjeeling district of West Bengal, is a breathtakingly beautiful protected area known for its rich biodiversity, stunning landscapes, and high-altitude trekking routes. Situated along the Singalila Ridge at an altitude ranging from 2,400 meters to 3,600 meters, it is the highest national park in West Bengal.
Initially established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1986, it was later upgraded to a national park in 1992. Singalila is famous for its dense forests of rhododendrons, magnolias, and bamboo, which bloom vibrantly in spring, creating a mesmerizing natural spectacle. The park is most renowned for being one of the few places in India where the elusive red panda can be spotted.
Other wildlife species include Himalayan black bears, clouded leopards, serows, barking deer, and various species of civets and pheasants. Singalila is also a paradise for birdwatchers, hosting over 300 bird species, including the vibrant Satyr tragopan, blood pheasant, and different species of eagles and flycatchers. One of the most popular attractions of Singalila National Park is the Sandakphu trek, which takes adventurers to the highest point in West Bengal (3,636 meters) and offers spectacular views of the world’s highest peaks, including Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu.
